His frogman, James Joseph Magennis, then swam out and attached mines to the bottom of the cruiser, which were subsequently exploded when the sub was out of range. His Victoria Cross was awarded for a mission that involved the piloting of a submarine underneath a heavy Japanese cruiser. He also started Underwaterwork, a commercial diving business. He is often cited as being one of the driving forces behind the popularity of scuba diving, as he and some friends set up an exhibit on how the frogman approach to diving and lighter equipment used, was infinitely more useful than the older, heavier equipment had been. While employed as a police officer, Fraser donned his old scuba gear and went down to look for the body, instead of using the usual drag net approach of searching for a missing body (in water).
